Project: Weekend Hunger provides a large bag of nutritious food to low and extremely low income seniors just prior to the last weekend of each month.

We need volunteers to assemble food bags for seniors once each month. Our next scheduled dates for assembling bags are April 27, May 25, and June 29th. Assembly starts at 1:00 and ends promptly at or before 2:30 p.m. Our office is open from 8 am to 4:00 pm and our phone number is 503-662-7035 to register by yourself or as part of a team.

This is a great opportunity for a group from a business or organization to work together doing something rewarding, have fun, and develop teamwork.

We discovered that many seniors we serve with hot lunch meals during the week, don’t have enough, or any, food in the house the last weekend of the month. Since these seniors are extremely low income, they most often do not have enough money for any food the last few days before their meager social secutiy checks deposit.

The food bags go to homebound seniors. As a consequence of poverty, many of these seniors must make difficult financial decisions throughout each month; whether to buy food or medicine, whether to pay rent or use the air conditioner-which risks an electric bill they cannot afford. The purchase of food often comes last.

Through generous grants we are able to purchase great food, but we are in need of volunteers to bag it and deliver it to about 150 frail seniors throughout Yolo County. Drivers and delivery routes have been established that only take about 1 hour of each volunteer's time. The gratefulness of the seniors is absolutely heart-warming.
