out of the darkness walk

The most recent data shows that over 38,000 people die by suicide in the United States. It is the tenth leading cause of death in the U.S., yet suicide is preventable. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention leads the fight against suicide. It is dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy as well as reaching out to those affected by suicide.

The Out of the Darkness Walk is the major fundraising campaign for the organization. There are over 360 Community Walks across the country every fall with over a hundred thousand people participating nationwide. The Olympia Out of the Darkness Community Walk is Saturday, September 12, 2015. The proceeds from the Walk benefit continued research and education that saves lives.

We will need help before, during and after the event with tasks like set-up, help with kids craft, food table, registration, etc. Thank you for your consideration.

Mission Statement

The Mission of AFSP is to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.

Description

AFSP is a multifaceted organization made up of esteemed scientists, dedicated survivors of suicide loss, people with mental disorders and their families, and an expansive network of business and community leaders. We organize hundreds of events in communities across the country, raising millions of dollars each year to support our work, both locally and nationally. We advocate for social change, supporting policies that contribute to reducing and preventing suicides nationwide. While AFSP does not provide direct services, such as counseling or running a crisis hotline, we do work closely with the organizations providing these services.
