The College Success Program (CSP) at LEAP for Education needs you! Our programs start the week of September 14 th so we need volunteers as soon as possible! We are an afterschool college prep program looking for several volunteers to assist with our group and individual meetings for HS juniors and seniors.

LEAP for Education is a non-profit organization that specializes in working with middle school, high school, and college students to help them succeed in achieving their college and career goals. The organization primarily works to service low-income, first generation students from Salem, Peabody, and Gloucester.

The CSP staff meets with a cohort of HS juniors in each city once a week for three hours and with HS seniors both individually and as a group on a separate day each week. In this program, students are able to get a jumpstart on resume writing, college and career research, and college/financial aid applications. Students continue to meet with CSP staff while in college for help remaining on track academically as well as for support services.

Volunteer Description and Responsibilities:

This would be a great opportunity for: someone who is interested in education, social work or non-profit work; college students looking to satisfy a college requirement for field placements/internships, service learning, etc.; an individual who has experience with first generation college students; and/or simply a desire to give back. Due to the nature of the work that we do with our students, we are really looking for someone who can commit for either one full semester (Sept.-Dec. or Jan.-June) or an entire academic year. We can be flexible so just let us know your plans. (SAT tutors should skip to the Peabody positions).

The main goal is to assist the CSP Site Coordinator in running the weekly high school (senior and junior) group meetings at 1 of our 3 locations (currently seeking volunteers for Peabody & Gloucester only). Although there is no "typical day" at the College Success Program, what would be expected during weekly group meetings is:

  • Prior to the meetings: Reading the pre-planned lesson plan and preparing for the activities by collecting materials, possibly responding weekly to the HS junior groups’ journal entries, etc.
  • Setting up the room, putting out the snacks, writing agenda on board for students, turning on computers, etc.
  • Taking weekly attendance and keeping track of students’ grades on a quarterly basis
  • Reminding students of upcoming meetings and follow up with students who are not meeting attendance standards
  • Monitoring and assisting students as they work on assigned tasks (such as resume writing, college and/or scholarship applications, financial aid forms, registering for college entrance exams like SAT’s, Subject Tests, ACT’s, etc.)
  • Cleaning up, putting away snacks, etc.
  • Reflecting on the lesson and what the students got out of the activities so we can make changes for the future

Volunteer Position(s):

What we need in Gloucester (1 volunteer for 7.5 hours a week, or 2 volunteers (one for 4 hours, and one for 3.5 hours):

1 volunteer to assist with the HS seniors group meetings held every Monday from 2:30-5:30pm (hours would be 2-6pm), and a different volunteer or the same person to assist with the individual meetings on Tuesdays 2:30-5:30pm (hours would be 2-5:30pm) at Gloucester High School. This volunteer should feel comfortable with assisting students with writing, revising and submitting their college applications. This cohort size is currently less than 13 students.

What we need in Peabody (1 volunteer for 8 hours a week, or 2 volunteers for 4 hours each, plus 1-2 SAT tutor(s)):

We have two HS junior groups running this year at Peabody Veteran’s Memorial High School. We need a volunteer to assist with one group which runs every Monday 2:15-5:15pm and a different volunteer or the same person to assist with the other group every Wednesday 2:15-5:15pm (hours for assistant volunteers would be 1:45-5:45pm). These groups focus more on resume writing, career exploration, college research, etc. The cohort size is currently between 15-20 students in each group.

We are also in need of one or two SAT prep tutor(s) for the 2 HS junior groups in Peabody. SAT prep will run for 1 hour per group from 4:15-5:15pm (October thru May). Tutors must be familiar with the SAT test and be able to teach testing strategies. Knowledge in the new SAT is preferred.

If interested in volunteering with us, please email resume to: ehaggerty@leap4ed.org & specify: 1) which position (assistant or SAT tutor), 2) which city, 3) which day(s) and how many hours a week you can commit to, and 4) whether you can commit to 1 semester or a full year.
