Want to have some fun volunteering??? Come be with us on Halloween afternoon.

The Joe Niekro Foundation™ will host the second annual Phoenix Walkathon for Brain Aneurysm/AVM Awareness on October 31st 2015 at Steele and Indian Park entitled Zombie Walk...because brains matter. We are seeking volunteers to help the day of the walk with registration, setup, tear down, unloading, manning games for children, and other various tasks.

This one mile and three mile walk will raise funds to support the brain aneurysm and AVM genetic research project initiating out of Barrows Neurological Institute. This event also allows patients and family members affected by a brain aneurysm or AVM an opportunity to spread awareness & educate the community. Along with allowing participants to honor or remember loved ones who were taken by this horrible condition which touches 1 in 15 lives.

This event will also provide a safe environment for family members to dress up and participate in Halloween while supporting an important cause. The walk will start at 12:00PM with the "After Walk Celebration" starting at 12:30 to 4:00PM. There will be plenty of activities for the entire family to enjoy after the walk such a vendor booths for shopping, a band for entertainment, games/activities for the children, and costume contest for the best Zombie. Additionally, volunteers will set up tables through the venue to pass out candy treats. This will provide a safe environment for the children celebrate Halloween.

Mission Statement

The Joe Niekro Foundationis committed to aiding in the research and treatment of aneurysm/AVM/stroke patients and families. Our goal is to raise awareness about factors, causes, treatments and research of these conditions. Funds are used to educate the public, to support patients and families, and to develop awareness programs and educational materials for hospitals, clinics and other institutions nationwide.

Description

As many as 1 in 15 will develop a brain aneurysm, AVM, or other hemorrhagic stroke

Every 8 minutes an aneurysm ruptures

The average age for an AVM rupture is 17 years old

50% of ruptured aneurysm patients will die within minutes and over 50% will die within the first thirty days after rupture

Of the remaining half, 50% will suffer a delayed death and those remaining will usually suffer permanent neurological deficit

Brain aneurysms are most prevalent in people ages 35

Women, more than men, suffer from brain aneurysms at a ratio of 3:2
