Mentors make up a crucial part of the services LSS Refugee Services offers to the families and individuals we work with. One way to think about the Mentor/Mentee relationship is a family friend relationship.
Our caseworkers are only able to work with newly resettled families for 90 days. That’s just three months to learn enough English to navigate a new place, start trying to find employment, figure out how to pay rent, and try to understand the cultural rollercoaster you stepped on when you left your home country.
English language skills are critical and take a lot of practice. Exploring and getting to know the city you live in is important and exciting. Conversations about values can unlock deeper cultural understanding.
Many people feel like they don’t have that much to share. At LSS Refugee Services, we think that often our volunteers should give themselves more credit! You have so much to share and teach.
Mentors can enrich the lives of their mentees by providing that support and guidance. Even more, Mentees often enrich the lives of Mentors as they build their relationship, together.
Mentoring is a three to six month long commitment, with visits two to four times a month. For more information, contact us!
