ORGANIZATION: My Sister's Place

  • 13 people are interested

My Sister's Place Legal Center serves survivors of human trafficking, domestic violence and other forms of persecution. Many of our clients have emigrated from Central America, and come to us for representation in their family court and immnigration cases. We need volunteer interpreters to provide interpretation during client and witness interviews, and to provide document translation. In addition to having English-Spanish fluency, it is essential that our volunteers have some experience and comfort serving survivors of trauma, and that they be supportive and non-judgmental. We ask our interpreters to provide word for word interpretation, rather than summaries. My Sister's Place is a collegial environment, and we have the honor of doing compelling work on behalf of citizens and non-citizens alike. We can be flexible with regard to volunteer hours, and prefer our volunteers to come in for two to four hour blocks.

Mission Statement

MSP strives to engage each member of society in our work to end domestic violence, so that all relationships can embrace the principles of respect, equality, and peacefulness. Since 1978, we have advanced this mission throughout the Westchester County region with advocacy, community education, and services to those harmed by domestic violence.

Through advocacy, we act as a force for social change in law and public policy.

Through community education, we challenge public perceptions of intimate violence and the social inequities that give rise to it, and we promote prevention with a special emphasis on youth.

Through direct services, we support the abused in seeking safety, self-determination, and justice.

Description

MSP provides comprehensive shelter, advocacy, legal services, and supportive services for victims of domestic violence, sexu al abuse, stalking, and human trafficking and currently offers services and programs that address the needs of domestic violence victims at various stages of separating from their abusers and their subsequent pursuit of productive, independent lives. Services and programs include: two emergency shelters; a 24-hour hotline for assistance and referrals; an extensive support group network in both English and Spanish; a full service Legal Center providing advice and representation; and a Self Sufficiency program that helps transition victims back to the workforce. MSP’s comprehensive children’s services include both residential and non-residential support groups and a therapeutic art program for children who have experienced domestic violence. Outreach efforts reach high school students to prevent dating violence and healthcare workers to identify signs of domestic violence.
