"The victim advocate was the first person to make me feel human again."
--Survivor of Sexual Assault
Are you looking for an opportunity to empower survivors of sexual assault? Do you have a unique talent to share? Do you want to make a difference in your community?
The Women's Shelter of South Texas has a a unique opportunity to apply your talents and interests to support those who need it most.
Become a Sexual Assault Victim Advocate:
Sexual assault advocacy programs are a critical part of any community response. It is critical that advocates responding to victims of sexual assault do so in a non-judgmental and supportive manner; suggesting options but allowing the victim to decide what course of action to take.
As a trained victim advocate, you will provide crisis intervention and direct support to victims of sexual assault. Studies have found that victims who were served by victim advocates (such as yourselves!) were least likely to blame themselves for the assault, experienced fewer symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, had less difficulty trusting others, and were more likely to successfully return to work.
As part of the certification process, you will receive 40 hours of training under the auspices of the Texas Office of the Attorney General. Classes begin in October, so sign up now and make a difference in the life of a survivor.
