Bonding is a beautiful thing
“One of the greatest values of mentors is the ability to see ahead what others cannot see and to help them navigate a course to their destination.” — John C. Maxwell

Thanks to a grant from community connectors, LIFETOWN is searching for volunteers who will be matched with a middle or high school student with mild to moderate disabilities for one - on - one mentoring. Volunteer Mentors will meet with their student once a month starting September 2017 for eight months during the regular LifeTown hours 10am to Noon. Mentors will help students using lesson plans we provide to learn and practice various skills relating to financial literacy, communication and socialization and job exploration (resumes, mock interviews building job exploration skills and a mock job fair). We will provide all the training and materials you will need to help your student. We just completed the first year of this program "LifeTown's RoadMap to Successful Mentoring" and it was a huge success! Please consider becoming a volunteer mentor and you will have the opportunity to make a real difference in the life of one of these students - many of which come from impoverished families and do have strong support systems and role models. Our goal is to empower these students so they can become more confident, self sufficient and independent in our society as adults. While we don’t know the dates yet for when the students will be visiting, we will do our best to accommodate your schedule. Several mentor training sessions will be offered this summer as we prepare for the 2016-2017 school year, so please contact us soon if you are interested. Volunteering at LIFETOWN is extremely fun, rewarding and very interactive! Please contact Allison Kollar at 614-939-0765 or email at allison@lifetowncolumbus.org if you are interested at learning more about this wonderful volunteer opportunity. Visit www.lifetowncolumbus.org for more information, videos and photos about LIFETOWN! There are only three LIFETOWNS in the entire country and we feel very fortunate to have one here in Central Ohio helping our students with special needs reach all of their goals and aspirations!

About LifeTown Lessons for Life

Location:

6220 East Dublin-Granville Road, New Albany, OH 43054, US

Mission Statement

LifeTown is a simulated city where children with special needs will come to learn and practice life skills in a realistic and supportive environment. The LifeTown village has a real bank so children can interact with a bank teller, withdraw money and enjoy a sense of responsibility as they manage their own accounts. Additionally, LifeTown will features a real doctor's office, dentist's office, pet store, library, movie theater, hair salon, concession shop and park. Through role-play, the children will develop vital skills, such as completing a job application, interviewing for a job, learning about teamwork and socialization, and, best of all, being inspired by the safe, warm, loving atmosphere. Lif Town 's realistic "cityscape" increases independence, self-confidence, and self-determination.

Description

When disabilities are compounded by poverty, children are at even higher risk of a life of failure and dependence. Through a groundbreaking partnership between Schottenstein Chabad House/Friendship Circle and Columbus Public Schools, the LifeTown "village" will bridge the gap between classroom instruction and real life learning that often exists for students with special needs. The vast majority of youngsters who will benefit from Life Town will be from impoverished backgrounds. These children are most at risk of being left behind in society.
