Adapted Aquatics is a small swim class for students with disabilities/special needs ages 5-22 (mostly w/Autism & Asperger’s). The Aquatics Instructor will work with each student/volunteer pair (you do not need to know how to teach swimming). Your role would be to help a student practice what the teacher teaches & to motivate him/her to meet the goals we’ve set! You don’t need to know how to teach swimming just be willing/able to be in the pool to work with the student. Please note that the ambient noise in this indoor pool can make it difficult for some volunteers to hear the children.
Choose from one of two classes or help with both:

Mission Statement
Chapel Hill Parks & Recreation Adapted Recreation and Inclusion program provides adapted programming, inclusion support and consultation with parks & recreation staff to help include people with special needs/disabilities in Parks & Recreation activities.
Description
We provide specialized programs and inclusion support for children and youth with disabilities to participate in Chapel Hill Parks & Recreation programs. Volunteers usually help children with program instructions and practice, play with the kids and aid in set up and clean up of program materials.
Most of our participants have Autism while a few have physical or other limitations. We do not place volunteers with individuals who might be a safety risk. We do perform a background check before volunteers can begin working with our vulnerable populations. For more information or special circumstances please call Marian Kaslovsky@ 919 968-2813.
