If you enjoy helping kids and teens explore new ideas and activities, think creatively and intellectually, and gain self-confidence, consider becoming a Youth Services Library Mentee. Mentees gain work readiness skills and real-world experience that will help them prepare for future careers in San Diego and beyond. If you are interested in volunteering for the library but can’t commit to this schedule, email libraryvolunteer@sandiego.gov to learn about other opportunities.

6. Gain understanding of public library environment and materials RotationOptions Mentees choose from the following options for each rotation. Not all options are available at all library locations:

Do Your Homework @ the Library Tutor/Learning Rotation (available during fall,winter, and spring)
STEAM Coach Rotation (available year round)
Summer Reading Program Rotation (available during summer rotation)
Summer Lunch Program Rotation (available during summer rotation)

Do Your Homework @ the Library Tutor/Learning Description
Mentees who participate in the Tutor/Learning Rotation will have the opportunity to serve with Mayor Faulconer’s Do Your Homework @ the Library program. This rotation is well suited for high school students, college students, and young adults who enjoy helping kids and teens in an academic setting. Mentees will help K-8 students with their various homework assignments (such as math, reading, science, and history), communicate with library staff and volunteers, and assist with the daily operations of a homework center at a San Diego Public Library location. No prior teaching or tutoring experience is necessary.

STEAM Coach
If you are interested in assisting young people in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math skills, this rotation is right for you. Tasks may include assisting in the 3D Printing and Bio Labs and assisting in computer labs or one-on-one with common computer applications, software, and technical devices.

Summer Reading Program
Are you looking for a fun and rewarding way to spend your summer? Help out in the Summer Reading Program, which encourages children, teens, and adults to read and stay active all summer long.

Summer Lunch Program
Are you interested in helping the library implement a community program for children by serving them lunch during the summer?
