I-Beam
One Student, One Adult, One Hour, Once per Week

I-Beam is a lunchtime literacy and mentoring program that connects volunteer adult mentors with 2 nd-5 th grade students. On the same day each week, volunteers travel to a nearby elementary school for one hour of lunch socializing then one-on-one reading with their student. For the one hour session, the mentors promote the skills of reading, the love of reading and encouraging, consistent adult relationships.

One Student. One Adult. One Hour, Once per Week.

I-Beam is an initiative of East Cooper Faith Network (ecfaithnetwork.org).

Founded in Mount Pleasant in 2011, I-Beam has grown from 55 volunteers from two churches, one school and two grade levels to more than 255 volunteers from 16 organizations/churches impacting students in six elementary schools east of the Cooper, grades two through five. Currently, I-Beam is facilitating a mentor program at Jennie Moore Elementary, Mamie P. Whitesides Elementary, James B. Edwards Elementary, Belle Hall Elementary, Laurel Hill Primary, Carolina Park and St. James Santee Elementary.

As this program is ever growing and ever evolving, we are always looking for new volunteer mentors and new partner churches. Please spread the word among your friends and colleagues about the goals, plans and needs for the children who will be positively impacted by volunteers through I-Beam.

Description

East Cooper Faith Network (ECFN) Is a collaborative of churches, faith-based organizations, and civic groups dedicated to creating a community where all East Cooper residents are safe, healthy and have the opportunity to realize their full potential. Mission: Join together in faith to break the cycle of generational poverty in the East Cooper communities. ECFN offers 3 primary programs focusing on Education (reading), Enrichment, and Environment to support this mission.

Education gives you opportunity. I-Beam is a reading and mentoring program where mentors meet once a week during the school year with children in the 2nd to 5th grade. ECFN and civic organizations recruit volunteer mentors for the program and ECFN provides training and support to all participants. In the East Cooper, we currently are engaged in mentoring over 192 students in 6 schools with over 230 mentors.

One Student, One Adult, One Hour, One Day a Week.

Enrichment gives you hope. The Summer Enrichment Program is for I-Beam aged students to participate in enrichment programs that engages the mind body, and spirit. This group promotes the opportunity for low income East Cooper students to have a safe, structured and stimulating environment to especially help ease the backslide of education in the summer months. Programming consists of daily reading with other areas such as art, theatre, nature and science.

A families Environment gives you quality of life. Fix It! is a small home repair outreach initiative to serve needy homeowners in the East Cooper Communities. This group facilitates the coordination of skilled volunteers and the collaboration of community agencies to ensure safe and healthy homes for our neighbors by providing home repair and wheelchair ramps. The goal of Fix It! is to reduce the number of community members in homes that are or nearly are hazardous to their health and well-being.
