The Y’s communication department is seeking an outgoing, reliable volunteer with enthusiasm and motivation to join a team supporting social media efforts at YMCA sites throughout Tucson for a special YMCA photo journalism project.

Project:

The Y has begun a 'People of the Y’ campaign with the goal of capturing the culture of the Y by interviewing the people who make us who we are (i.e. members, staff, parents, etc.). Through this project, the volunteer will have an opportunity to develop many valuable public relations, marketing, journalism, and communications skills such as photography, videography, interviewing and story writing as well as to meet with professionals in the industry.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Visiting a new Y site weekly; roaming the facility and capturing short and casual, on-the-spot interviews with YMCA members willing to participate in short interviews about the impact the Y has had on their life.
  • Capturing photos and/or video of members within the Y.
  • Creating stories from the interviews to post on the YMCA Facebook, Twitter, and the YMCA of Southern Arizona website with support from the Communications/Special Projects Director.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will be at ease talking with people they don’t know and understand how to approach strangers respectfully. The incumbent will have a knack for interviewing and interest in photography in conjunction with understanding how to craft a story from a short interview. He/she will have a passion and interest in social media and must be able to provide his/her own camera for photo opportunities within the branch. Some initial training and mentoring will be provided. Candidate must have reliable transportation. Minimum commitment of three hours per week through May, 2016; YMCA may be able to accommodate additional volunteer hours and have some flexibility in the schedule. Please note child abuse prevention training and a background check will be required prior to beginning this volunteer position.

How to apply:

Interested volunteers should e-mail a cover letter and resume, as well as availability and timeframe/requirements to Amanda Thomas, Director of Communications and Special Projects at amandat@tucsonymca.org.
