Severe Weather Shelter Network: Drivers

Severe Weather Shelter Network provides emergency, overnight shelter on life threatening winter nights for individuals living on the streets. All the Host Sites are in the west metro Denver area.

Severe Weather Shelter Network has 2 regions for which we provide transportation for our homeless guests. Warming Sites provide a place for our guests to wait for transportation to Host Sites on shelter nights. Guests are returned to the Warming sites in the morning.

Severe Weather Shelter Network is mobilized by overnight weather conditions. We only open when overnight tempartures are going to be 32 degrees or colder and wet, or 20 degrees or colder and dry.

Drivers determine their availability by day of the week. We ask Drivers to be available at least one night or morning each week between October 1st and April 30th.

Each Shelter night requires as many as 6 drivers and 6 fifteen passenger vans to transport all of the guests we will shelter on a given night.

• 3 Drivers for the Central Region: Hampden north to I-70, C-470 east to Sheridan
• 3 Drivers for the South Region: Hampden south to C-470, C-470 east to Broadway

Evening Drivers print out a roster of the guests they will be transporting that night and pick them up at the assigned Warming Site by 7 pm. Guests are transported to the Host Site on call for that week. Morning Drivers pick up the guests at the Host Site by 7 am and transport them back to the assigned Warming Site.

Drivers are required to attend a 4-hour volunteer training plus a Driver orientation in their first season.
