Wild West Jeans and Jewels

For over 67 years the Society for disABILITIES has enhanced the quality of life for people with disabilities within the Central Valley. The Society provides recreational programs including: adapted snow ski, water ski, bike camp, a Day on the Farm, bowling, soccer, and a prom. We also operate the largest loan closet of adapted medical equipment within Northern California, loaning out walkers, wheelchairs, bedside commodes and hospital beds for those in need. We teach sign language classes, are a resource and referral agency for the community, and run two thrift stores, providing job training skills.

Our Wild West Gala - Jeans and Jewels will be held October 17, 2015. Guests will be dressed in their finest jeans and jewels at Durrer Barn where they'll enjoy a delicious rib-eye steak dinner, live and silent auction, midway games, mechanical bull, beverage bars, and Rodeo House Band performing their kicking country and southern rock music while the guests dance the night away under the stars.

We need up to 100 volunteers in every category to help make the event a success - decorations, games, auction, registration...you name it, we need it! This is our biggest fundraiser of the year with over 300 attendees and it's a 21 and up event.

About Society for disABILITIES

Mission Statement

The Society is dedicated to improving the quality of life and self-sufficiency of physically challenged children and adults in Stanislaus County.

Description

The Society was founded in 1947 as the "Stanislaus County Society for Crippled Children and Adults, Inc." Through several name revisions, we have remained an independent, locally supported organization providing services and programs designed to enhance the quality of life for physically-challenged individuals of all ages and all disabilities who reside in Stanislaus County. Over these past 60 years, our funding and support came from private sources, which have enabled us to provide a wide variety of programs and services.

Society for Handicapped provides opportunities for recreation for disabled children and adults in our snow and water ski programs. We also coordinated an adapted bike camp for disabled children to learn the skill of riding a two wheeled bike.

Many individuals of all ages in our community do not have health insurance or the financial resources to purchase the medical and adaptive equipment they need to maintain their health and independence. The Society for disABILITIES Special Needs Fund Program was born in 1987 to help meet these basic needs and become a safety net for those who need it most. Today, as more of our population is uninsured, our community ages and health care costs rise, more and more people need assistance to purchase necessary health aids and adaptive equipment.

The Society for disABILITIES maintains a Loan Closet of adaptive equipment such as wheelchairs, bedside commodes, walkers, crutches, slide boards, and shower chairs. This free service is made available to anyone in need, from those experiencing a temporary disability to someone with a permanent disability.
