ORGANIZATION: Healing Abuse Working for Change (HAWC)

HAWC

Assist survivors of Domestic Violence with various tasks in Lynn District, Salem District, or Essex County Probate.

Some of the common areas of focus are:

  • Obtain a restraining or harassment order.
  • Modify an existing RO or Harrasment Order.
  • Explain local resources.
  • Connect survivors to HAWC.
  • Listen and empower the survivor to make independent and informed decisions.

NO LEGAL EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY! You will not provide legal advice, you will support survivors through their hearings and provide them with guidance.

33-hour HAWC training will be provided prior to beginning volunteer work. Trainings are held in September, February and May/June of each year in Salem.

An additional 3 day training in Lawrence through the Massachusetts Office of Victim Assistance is mandatory within 6 months of beginning your role.

Mission Statement

The purpose of HAWC is to create social change by taking action against personal and societal patterns of violence and oppression. HAWC provides services and support to victims of domestic violence residing in 23 cities and towns in the Massachusetts Northshore in order that they may make informed, independent decisions about their futures.

Description

Since 1978, HAWC has offered free and confidential domestic violence programs and services from Saugus to Rockport.

HAWC has offices in Salem, Lynn, Gloucester, and Beverly. Services offered include:

  • 24-hour hotline
  • Emergency Shelter
  • Hospital advocacy at North Shore Medical Center sites
  • Advocacy in Beverly police departments
  • Legal advocacy in fourdistrict court jurisdictions (Gloucester, Lynn, Peabody, and Salem) and Essex County Probate and Family Court
  • Support groups
  • Individual short term advocacy
  • Prevention education in schools and the community
  • Services for children who witness domestic abuse
