College Admissions Made Possible

Make a difference for aspiring low-income/minority high-school students - become a Teaching Fellow for College Admissions Made Possible (CAMP). As a CAMP Teaching Fellow, you will teach ACT test-preparation skills to high-school students on-site at Birmingham public high schools during the fall 2015 semester. Classes are 90 minutes long and meet once a week for 11 weeks. CAMP provides complete training, lesson plans, materials and on-going support. As a Teaching Fellow, you will receive 3 hours of paid training (required) prior to teaching. (Highly qualified applicants may be offered an additional Fall semester class and/or offered a Spring 2016 position.)

Applications are open to qualified graduate students and university upperclassmen, as well as college graduates. Previous teaching experience is a plus, but is not required. Applicants should, however, have a command of test-taking strategies and be competent in basic mathematics (geometry and algebra II) and/or English, Language Arts reasoning. These competencies should be accompanied by the ability to break down concepts and provide clear explanations of problem solving and/or critical reading. The successful candidate will be comfortable in the high-school setting and be confident yet compassionate with high school students and be able to pass a background check. Mission Statement

The mission of College Admissions Made Possible is to increase college access across Alabama by providing [or connecting] students and their families with empowering, intensive, and comprehensive tools, thereby making students more academically competitive for acceptance to the college or university of their choice.

Description

CAMP was established to address the issues that often prevent low income and first generation college students from achieving college success. The first problem is that students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds historically score significantly lower on standardized test than students from wealthier backgrounds. Secondly, low-income students and their families often lack access to crucial information about the college admission and financial aid processes. Many urban and rural school distracts have limited resources and operate with a very small staff of school counselors, which prevents many high schools from supplying critical information about the admissions process to prospective college students.

CAMP provides intensive college admissions preparation to low income and rural students in Alabama via its four core services: college admissions workshops, individual/ group counseling, test preparation, and college tours/fairs.
