The Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) is gearing up to build a brand new low income apartment building in Seattle's Central District. The building will be located directly nextdoor to our current low income senior building at 2010 S. Jackson St. The current building is named for jazz musician Ernestine Anderson. The new building will be named for another jazz great, Abbey Lincoln.

The nearby community has asked that during the construction phase we decorate the fencing surrounding the construction materials. We're seeking a volunteer artist to design and paint a mural for the temporary fence. Following the completion of the construction we can likely rehome the mural in or around the new building. We would like the mural to focus on either the LIHI mission of housing or the Jackson St legacy of jazz music.

Interested artists should contact Melissa for more information. An interview will need to occur and a design will need to be approved prior to beginning the project. The project can be worked on either at the site or in a separate location. Painting materials and plywood for the mural will be provided by LIHI. Artists should plan to submit a needed list of supplies in advance. Project should be completed by late Sept/early Oct.

If interested, please email mtiberio@lihi.org with examples of your previous artwork.

About Low Income Housing Institute

Location:

2407 First Ave,, Seattle, WA 98121, US

Mission Statement

The Low Income Housing Institute develops, owns and operates housing for the benefit of low-income, homeless and formerly homeless people in Washington state; advocates for just housing policies at the local and national levels; and administers a range of supportive service programs to assist those we serve in maintaining stable housing and increasing their self-sufficiency.

Description

LIHI develops and provides affordable housing to 4,000+ low income, homeless and formerly homeless people, including families. In 2019, an estimated 11,199 people experienced homelessness in King County alone. Many of LIHI housing projects focus on transitioning families and individuals out of homelessness, including chronically homeless populations. Most of the units developed by LIHI are occupied by formerly homeless households.

LIHI assists our residents with services that help them maintain stable housing and prevent them from becoming homeless again (e.g. through improving resident income and/or education status, dealing with long standing mental and physical health conditions) and increase self-sufficiency.

We also help homeless individuals and families remain healthy & employed: LIHI operates the Urban Rest Stop - an innovative hygiene center for the homeless located in downtown Seattle; a safe, clean and dignified place where as many as 500 homeless individuals, families, elders and youth access restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities each day. This center is open seven days a week, with extended hours specifically designed to assist homeless persons who are working or seeking employment. 60% of URS patrons have steady employment, but can't earn enough income to afford the rent.
