ORGANIZATION: Arts Out Loud

Are you passionate about helping a rising nonprofit corporation grow as it enters its next stage of development? Arts Out Loud (AOL), founded in 2014 and the only arts dedicated LGBT focused organization currently active in the US, is in a growth spurt and looking to add to its Board of Directors.

If you support empowering and educating LGBT kids who have a desire to pursue the arts through a mentoring program that matches kids with LGBT adults, craft focused workshops, and scholarship funds, this could be a life-changing opportunity for you.

We're looking for Board members with at least 5 years’ experience in Public Relations. This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about our mission and kids, and who would like to gain experience and participate in the early stages of development of a dynamic startup nonprofit organization.

What will be your primary responsibilities as a Board Member?

The Board of Directors supports the work of Arts Out Loud and is responsible for overseeing the direction and management of the organization. While day-to-day operations are led by AOL’s Chief Executive Officer, the Board-CEO relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected, especially in these early stages of development of the organization.

Leadership:

  • Attend Board meetings (virtually) and organization events;
  • Communicate regularly and serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO;
  • Assist in identifying and recruiting other Board members;
  • Ensure effective organizational planning, monitor effectiveness of programs and activities;
  • Work actively to secure adequate funding for the organization;
  • Serve on committees and participate in special activities;
  • Act as an ambassador for the organization, and forge connections with key stakeholders.

Fundraising:

Arts Out Loud Board Members will consider AOL a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that AOL can credibly solicit funds from foundations, organizations, and individuals, Arts Out Loud expects 100 percent Board Member compliance. An annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity and which feels substantial to them in accordance with their affinity for the organization, but which will be no less than $1000 annually (FY is Jan 1- December 31. This is a "give or get" commitment and will be prorated based on date of acceptance of position).

How long would I serve on the Board and what time commitment is needed?

Board meetings will be held 6 to 8 times per year depending on input regarding availability of board members. Board members are expected to prepare for and attend board meetings during which they actively engage in discussions and decision-making. The time commitment is approximately 8 hours a month for the duration of one’s term.

Board Directors are appointed for a one-year term, and are eligible for re-appointment.

Desired skills and experience:

  • Thorough understanding and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in public relations;
  • You MUST be currently working in your field and be well connected as you will have a major role in our programs;
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of Arts Out Loud beneficiaries;
  • Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals.

Service on AOL’s Board of Directors is without remuneration or compensation.
