THE POSITION
Do you have a heart for serving others? Do you enjoy supporting education efforts, employment growth for youth and young adults?

Our member will serve with the direct mentoring of a Housing Authority Service Coordinator. The member will be serving at one of our property community centers which assists families or elderly residents in the area. The overall impact of our member is to mentor, support, and connect residents with services that will enhance or better equip them to reach a level of self-sufficiency such as economically, and to impact their quality of life while they reside with EHA. The member will support the after school program with mentors and volunteers to implement study and homework time for all school age youth, adult education focus on financial literacy, and life skills to set and work towards goals.
For our Elderly/disabled housing, our member will support the Healthy Futures initiative, impacting quality of life, health education and activity.

The Washington Service Corps Individual Placement (IP) Program places 1-4 AmeriCorps members with local nonprofit agencies, community and faith-based organizations, schools and local government organizations to address unmet local needs of the community in which they serve. IP Program AmeriCorps members must be 20 to 25 years old at the start of the program year and serve for 10.5 months.

All positions run from October 1, 2015 - August 15, 2015, and are full-time (40+ hours/week). Members receive a living stipend of $1,195/month and are eligible to receive an education award of $5,735 upon successful completion of the service term. Health benefits offered.

EXAMPLES OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Member Key Essential Functions of the Position:
The members will develop and implement after school programming during the school year. They will track select students’ progress, connect them with volunteer tutors or mentors to support them in achieving their academic goals. The member will also develop with our staff, activities that build and enhance life skills in youth and adults to empower them to set and or reach goals of quality of life satisfaction, economic self -sufficiency or educational goals. The member will assist in the overall program services which include but are not limited to: ELL support, life skills, nutrition, budgeting, homework, community or civic service, recreational programming. The member will become familiar with tools and research such as the 40 developmental assets in character development and be a role model of these as well as providing activities to foster the healthy development of these assets.
With our senior properties, creating education and activities to enhance nutrition, physical health, safety and more.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Preferred is a college AA or higher. The ability to read, write and speak clearly in English. Must be able to manage time on your own, be a self-starter, use of computers to document and collect data, and complete required reports. Ability to be a helpful team member, good communicator and problem solver is important. Must be able to conduct self professionally to participate in trainings and meetings representing AmeriCorps and EHA.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to read and write, speak and understand Vietnamese, Ukrainian, Arabic, or Russian.
Some knowledge of educational social service resources available in the community and the agencies providing those services;

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Valid Washington State Drivers License or ability to obtain one within 60 days and a good driving record.

Candidates shall not have a felony criminal conviction. Successful candidate will be subject to a criminal background check.
