mentor2.0 1

You are invited to discover Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada’s (BBBSN) newest mentoring program: mentor2.0. This is the perfect opportunity for college-educated, busy professionals. It leverages technology and targeted curriculum to help youth successfully journey to and through college. Through mentor2.0, students work with mentors one-on-one, in-person and online, to develop strong personal relationships, nurture a college aspiration, and build skills that lead to college success.

Your commitment:

  • Share your time and your experiences. This program requires a completion of at least two years of college.
  • Weekly Email Communication: We provide writing prompts centered around curriculum that facilitates targeted, in-depth discussions addressing college readiness and success. You use these prompts to navigate the discussion between you and your mentee.
  • Monthly In-Person Meetings: BBBSN plans monthly group events, where you get to interact with your mentee in person. Most events will take place during the work week, after work, for about two hours. Most meetings will be held at Valley High School.
  • You will meet your mentee during their freshman year of high school and stay connected through their senior year. Between the emails and in-person meetings, you are dedicating just four to six hours per month!

Our committment: BBBSN will provide a dedicated staff person, trained in academic success strategies, to offer ongoing encouragement and professional match support.

Experience the rewarding benefits of knowing that you are making an impact in the life of a high school student. You will directly contribute to an increase in on-time graduation rates and an increase in college readiness, acceptance and enrollment rates in Clark County.

Remember what it was like to prepare for college and start a new and exciting chapter in your life? It can be overwhelming and even deter many students facing adversity from ever considering college as an option. Be a positive influence in a student’s life by becoming a mentor2.0 mentor. Visit bbbsn.imentor.org to sign up today or simply respond to this opportunity positng and we will walk you through the easy process! The program begins in the Fall of 2015.

Mission Statement

To provide children and youth facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

Description

Do you have just four hours a month to dedicate to changing the life of a child? That's truly all it takes to make an impact!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada (BBBSN) is a non-profit organization that is a leader in youth mentoring services. Since 1973, BBBSN has been developing positive mentoring relationships that have a direct and lasting impact on the lives of youth in our community, ages 6 through 18. Our mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships. BBBSN is the local agency of a national organization with over 100 years of history in providing mentors to youth who need them the most.

BBBSN's Site Based Mentoring program works directly in schools, with school principals, counselors and teachers to enhance a child's ability to learn, interact with their peers and reduce risky behavior and negative influences. Typically, the youth are ages 8 to 12, and are from low income and at-risk environments. We partner closely with eight elementary school sites within the Clark County School District.

Program staff from BBBSN are continuously and actively involved in every mentoring experience. Staff provide liaison with the school, support for mentors and families.

Site meetings are scheduled Monday through Friday during the school year. All matches at a site meet together on the same day and time for one hour per week. We ask for a minimum of a one year commitment to the program. The Bigs become very important in the life of their Littles.

Our Community Based program is the more traditional mentoring program of BBBSN. Carefully screened and trained mentors are matched with children in the community who can benefit from an additional caring and positive adult in their life. Over 90% of these children are being raised in a single parent household or, by grandparents - a growing population. These matches engage in activities in the community and on a schedule arranged between the Big, Little and parent or guardian. Matches meet a handful of times a month, doing activities in the community that the Big and Little enjoy together. We strive to support these matches so they stay together for years, or for life.
