ORGANIZATION: Heshima Kenya

We are Heshima Kenya, a non-profit organization which helps young, refugee women in Kenya create and sustain beautiful lives. We have a holistic mission: education, safe housing, parenting skills and entreprenuership. The Maisha Collective is a branch of Heshima Kenya in which the young girls make hand-dyed scarves which we then sell in the U.S. out of our Chicago office. While some of our sales are from our online store, the bulk of our sales are from selling at festivals and events across Chicagoland. With your help, we will sell scarves and spread our mission. The girls in Kenya will be paid a fair wage and you will help change lives. The weekend of August 7-9, we will be working an event at RETRO ON ROSCOE in Roscoe Village, Chicago. Please come out and help us work the event! We truely appreciate all of your help.

About Heshima Kenya

Location:

1111 N WELLS STREET, CHICAGO, IL 60610, US

Mission Statement

Heshima Kenya specializes in identifying and protecting unaccompanied and separated refugee children and youth, especially girls, young women and their children living in Nairobi, Kenya. Our shelter, education and community outreach services, coupled with local resources and the refugee community, empower this population to live healthy lives. By providing resources for long-term support, these girls and young women become catalysts for strengthening networks creating sustainable change within the local and global communities.

Description

Heshima Kenya, a nonprofit organization operating in Nairobi, Kenya, is the first organization in Kenya devoted to protecting unaccompanied and separated refugee children and youth, with a special focus in supporting women and girls ages 13 to 23 years old from Somalia, Ethiopia, DR Congo, Sudan, Rwanda, and Burundi.

We provide shelter, education, vocational training, case management support, and advocacy to participants and their children who have experienced the detrimental effects of war, the loss of their families, and, in many cases, kidnapping, rape, trafficking, unlawful detainment, and torture.

We also mobilize members of the refugee community through educational outreach. At the core of Heshima Kenya’s model is the creation of a social network that empowers girls and young women to strive for economic self-sufficiency and become community leaders in their own right.
