PARTICIPANT GROUP:
Adults
GOALS:
1) Provide crisis intervention, information, and referral services to clients, agencies, and other members of the community
2) Gather and report required data on hotline calls.
3) Collaborate with Bethany House staff in completing intake procedures.
ACTIVITIES AND TASKS:
Answer all incoming helpline calls; assess clients needs shelter; and determine client’s need.
OUTLINE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Knowledge of prevalence, scope and dynamics of domestic violence; knowledge of communication skills and the techniques used to screen for domestic violence; ability to assess the safety of a domestic violence victim; ability to respond appropriately when a victim discloses violence; and sensitivity to and ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds.
TIME COMMITMENT EXPECTED:
2 to 6 hours weekly.
PERSONAL TRAITS DESIRED:
Friendly and a willingness to learn more about domestic violence.
ORIENTATION AND TRAINING AVAILABLE:
Attend and complete BHNV Helpline Training; complete the designated number of hours in "on-the-phone" training; commit to covering one workday a week; gather and report all required data on helpline calls; cooperate with BHNV staff in completing intake procedures; and complete intake training.
SUPPORT, SUPERVISION AND EVALUATION PROVIDED:
Volunteer will work closely with the Family Assistance Program team especially in coordinating intake appointments.
MANDATORY ACTIVITIES:
Answer helpline calls, and gather and report required data into database. Must stay in close contact with the Helpline Coordinator.

Description
Bethany House of Northern Virginia, Inc. is a non-profit, faith-based organization serving women and children who have been victims of domestic violence and are homeless and destitute as a result.
We provide the support and care women and children recovering from domestic violence need through our Family Assistance Program (FAP). The FAP consists of four service areas:
1) CRISIS INTERVENTION
Anyone who calls our helpline receives immediate help, counsel, and advice. If shelter availability exists, an intake interview is set and client defines short-term and long-term goals with outcomes and a timetable for success.
2) COMMUNITYOUTREACH
Interaction with public safety officials, community leaders, social and human service providers, religious leaders, and individuals who enhance our crisis intervention by referring domestic abuse survivors to our services.
3) EMERGENCY SHELTER
Provide emergency shelter for four to six months along with case management, Self-Sufficiency Training and Resiliency Skills Program, and group and individual counseling.
4) AFTERCARE PROGRAM
Follow-up is done for two years to ensure clients keep their freedom and do not relapse into abuse.
