Bethany House of Northern Virginia provides emergency shelter and supportive services to victims of domestic violence throughout Northern Virginia and the surrounding DC metro communities. We are looking for volunteers to play with children as part of our childcare program.

GOALS:
1) To provide quality care to children.
2) Build meaningful relationships with children.

ACTIVITIES AND TASKS:
Watch the children for 2 hours on Thursday nights. The children range from newborns to teenagers. Additional opportunities for childcare at special Bethany House events are available throughout the year.

OUTLINE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Show up on your scheduled Thursday on-time and ready to interact with the children.

TIME COMMITMENT:

Primarily, help is needed Thursday evenings

PERSONAL TRAITS DESIRED:
Good with children, friendly and flexible. Knowledgeable about effective childcare techniques is a plus.

ORIENTATION AND TRAINING AVAILABLE:
A short volunteer training and orientation will be provided in order to become familiar with Bethany House’s procedures, programs, and the need for confidentiality. Basic information about domestic violence will be incorporated into the training.

Description

Bethany House of Northern Virginia, Inc. is a non-profit, faith-based organization serving women and children who have been victims of domestic violence and are homeless and destitute as a result.

We provide the support and care women and children recovering from domestic violence need through our Family Assistance Program (FAP). The FAP consists of four service areas:

1) CRISIS INTERVENTION

Anyone who calls our helpline receives immediate help, counsel, and advice. If shelter availability exists, an intake interview is set and client defines short-term and long-term goals with outcomes and a timetable for success.

2) COMMUNITYOUTREACH

Interaction with public safety officials, community leaders, social and human service providers, religious leaders, and individuals who enhance our crisis intervention by referring domestic abuse survivors to our services.

3) EMERGENCY SHELTER

Provide emergency shelter for four to six months along with case management, Self-Sufficiency Training and Resiliency Skills Program, and group and individual counseling.

4) AFTERCARE PROGRAM

Follow-up is done for two years to ensure clients keep their freedom and do not relapse into abuse.
