The Santa Cruz Public Libraries are launching a groundbreaking program this Fall and we're looking for just the right people to serve as volunteers. As a Jail Literacy Program Liaison, volunteers will work alongside Library staff to select reading materials to bring to the jails, help incarcerated individuals obtain library cards, suggest books and eventually help staff lead book discussion groups.
The purpose of this program is to bring the Library to incarcerated men and women as an integral component of our mission to provide service to all people in Santa Cruz County. Qualified candidates must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and have experience interacting with individuals from a variety of backgrounds, preferably within a law enforcement setting. Volunteers must be reliable, meet service commitments, and be strong advocates for literacy. After submitting an application and meeting with the Library's Volunteer Coordinator, the successful candidate will undergo two background screens, sign liability waivers, and attend an orientation class conducted by the Sheriff's Department.
