Elkhart County Historical Museum

Share your talents and gifts by becoming a volunteer at the museum. Volunteers are a vital part of the success of the institution and their help is greatly appreciated. You can have fun while assisting in preserving and sharing the history of Elkhart County!

We are lookin for volunteers to help out in serveral areas:

  • Greeter: Provide our visitors with a warm smile and a welcoming attitude by greeting visitors and providing orientation to the museum.
  • Docent: Does sharing local history with others fit your calling? As a docent you will share your knowledge and enthusiasm with visitors, present group tours, and assist with travel groups.
  • Collections: Do you prefer to work behind the scenes? Are you interested in artifacts and/or archival materials? Assist the Curator of Collections with artifact processing and data entry.
  • Event Volunteer: Help give our visitors meaningful programming experiences by providing assistance at events, aid with marketing and program prep work.
  • Youth Education: Are you young at heart? Enrich the lives of our youth by helping with Children's Activity Days, day camps, and school tours.
  • Gardener: Do you have a green thumb or just enjoy the outdoors? Help care for the museum's gardens by planting, watering, pulling weeds, and providing other care as needed.
  • Social Media: Do you tweet, blog, Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube? Help out the museum by producing and contributing content on social media.
  • Research: Use our archives and collections to help museum visitors and staff conduct research on personal, local, state, and national topics.

The mission of the Elkhart County Historical Society is to serve present and future generations by collecting, preserving, and sharing artifacts, documents, and images pertaining to the unique culture and history of Elkhart County and its environs.

Description

The Elkhart County Historical Museum was founded in 1968 as a partnership between the Elkhart County Historical Society and the Elkhart County Parks Department. Through the efforts of countless individuals, the museum has become one of the foremost institutions in northern Indiana dedicated to preserving and educating the public about local history.
