Community Outreach Internship
Agency Background:
The National MS Society is a collective of passionate individuals who want to do something about multiple sclerosis now. The Society helps people affected by MS by funding cutting-edge research, driving change through advocacy, facilitating professional education, and providing programs and services that help people with MS and their families move their lives forward. Headquartered in Center City Philadelphia, the Greater Delaware Valley Chapter was established in 1954 and is one of the largest of the Society’s chapters. Our office is located at 30 South 17 th Street, Suite 800, Philadelphia, PA 19103.
Position Summary:
The Community Outreach Intern will work closely with our Community Outreach Manager to build relationships and engage the community in providing services and programs to people living with MS. This role will provide opportunities to assist with outreach and overall support for our Self Help Groups, Speaker’s Bureau and programs for those who have been recently diagnosed. This position is an unpaid internship but may earn college credit.
Key Functions Include:
- Assist Community Outreach Manager with administrative tasks and outreach to all Self Help Group Leaders.
- Recruit, expand and organize the Chapter’s Speaker’s Bureau
- Assist in identifying accurate and accessible resources for people affected by MS.
- Identify additional community resources in all resource categories throughout the chapter.
- Review and update current community resources.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of Community Outreach Days.
- Administer Accessibility surveys to identified new venue resources.
- Some answering of phone calls and providing quality customer service
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Have obtained at least Sophomore status in a Bachelor degree program; OR be enrolled in Graduate degree program
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel (preferably 2010)
- Ability to represent the National MS Society in a professional manner
- Ability to engage others in conversation and solicit needed information
- Creative
- Comfortable handling "cold" outreach calls
- Passion for the healthcare field
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and proactively follow up
- Excellent organizational skills with careful attention to detail
- Sensitivity to and a positive attitude toward people with disabilities
- Commitment of at least 10-15 hours/week (office hours Mon. - Fri. 9am - 5pm)
Training:
- Society and chapter orientation includes education on the organization and multiple sclerosis
- An overview of basic office equipment and systems
- Ongoing feedback and additional training provided as needed by intern supervisor
Commitment:
- Commitment of at least 10-15 hours/week (office hours Mon. - Fri. 9am - 5pm)
