Catholic Charities Family Services (CC-FS) provides state-of-the-art behavioral health, child welfare, special education, early childhood and family-development services.

Role description: Undergraduate interns assist in the operation of a Family Services program to which they are assigned for a period of one semester or a summer intersession. Interns report directly to a staff supervisor within their program, with additional oversight from Volunteer Services. In compliance with Catholic Charity policies, undergraduates cannot serve clients in a clinical capacity; however, interns may be closely involved in other therapeutic aspects of their program, including directly with clients.

Undergraduate internship placements are available:

  • Villa Maria School (Timonium, MD) provides educational and clinical services for children grades 6-9 with significant emotional, behavioral, and learning challenges. Interns provide classroom and one-on-one assistance. Interns serve weekdays 8:45am-2:45pm.
  • Maura Pre-Vocational Center (Timonium, MD) provides opportunities for children at Villa Maria School and St. Vincent’s Villa Residential Treatment Center to practice vocational skills, from sewing and woodworking to cooking and gardening. Interns support the pre-vocational teaching staff and assist children in the classroom between 9:30am and 2:30am, Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays.
  • Villa Maria Diagnostic Program (Timonium, MD) provides a transitional, instructional classroom setting for children aged 4 - 13 residing in the diagnostic units at St. Vincent’s Villa, where they are receiving a complete diagnostic evaluation over a ninety day period. Interns serve in the morning from 9 am until early afternoon.
  • In-Home Intervention Service (Baltimore, MD) is a psychiatric rehabilitation program (PRP) that provides home-based support services to families and children with special needs and focuses social skill development and prosocial behavioral techniques. Undergraduate interns provide valuable administrative and clerical support.
  • St. Vincent’s Villa Residential Treatment Center (Timonium, MD) provides comprehensive therapeutic services to children whose behavioral and emotional needs have not responded to interventions and services provided at home or in the community. Undergraduate interns assist a variety of staff in a non-clinical capacity, with responsibilities varying by residential unit and supervisor. Interns serve on weekdays, 3pm and later.
  • Health Services (Timonium or Belcamp, MD) provides on-site medical and pharmacological support to Villa Maria School students and St. Vincent’s Villa Residents, as well as health and safety oversight for staff. Undergraduate interns provide valuable administrative and clerical support. Practicum for health care students available.
  • Marketing (Timonium, MD) - Interns work with our PR and Marketing partner Catalpha to develop new initiatives for recruiting candidates for our Treatment Foster Care program in Baltimore. Two semesters/terms minimum (between fall, spring, summer).

Requirements:

  • Enrollment as a student at an institution of higher education.
  • Successful completion of the application and screening processes, including an interview.
  • Orientation: Participation in Pre-Service Training for volunteers and interns, held quarterly (see p. 6).
  • Training: Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) training (upon being accepted to the program).
  • 100 hours served minimum per fall or spring semester; 75 minimum for summer internships.
  • On the job training or other training mandated by supervisor, depending on the role.

Responsibilities:

  • Varied across placements: interns’ on-site responsibilities vary by program and supervisor.
  • Abiding by the policies and procedures of Catholic Charities.
  • Attending monthly intern group meetings hosted by Volunteer Services.
  • Regularly reporting valuable feedback about your service experience to Volunteer Services - i.e. your hours, location, and any qualitative feedback.
  • Completing an exit interview or evaluation.
  • Submitting any evaluations or reports produced as part of your study requirements to Volunteer Services.
