AO Removal
Volunteers work hard to remove invasive woody shrubs from the meadow.

Michigan Audubon's Capital City Bird Sanctuary (CCBS) is an urban oasis for birds, but it needs your help to stay that way! Located on the banks of the Grand River just NW of downtown Lansing, CCBS provides over 60 acres of diverse habitat for birds and other wildlife. The sanctuary is open to the public and contains over a mile of nature trails for everyone to explore.

Every Wednesday, Michigan Audubon staff and volunteers gather to remove invasive plants that threaten habitat health. These workdays are a great opportunity to get to know the sanctuary and help give back to the birds. Think of these workdays as "extreme gardening" - these are mildly strenuous workdays that involve hiking around the sanctuary and cutting down invasive woody shrubs with hand saws, often in challenging locations. A good workout is guaranteed! We do take many snack and water breaks throughout the workday.

Wild raspberries, poison ivy, and biting insects are common so please dress appropriately with close-toed boots, long sleeves, pants, and a hat. Please bring gardening gloves if you have them, but we do have extras on site to borrow. Water and snacks will be available but feel free to bring extras if you like.

This event is weather dependent. Rain and thunderstorms will cancel the event. Please RSVP to receive up-to-date information on changes to this event.

Please RSVP to Rachelle Roake at RRoake@michiganaudubon.org if you plan to attend a workday. We hope to see you at the sanctuary!

Mission Statement

Michigan Audubon connects birds and people for the benefit of both through conservation, education, and research efforts in the state of Michigan.

Description

Formed in 1904 and formally incorporated in 1905, Michigan Audubon is the state's oldest conservation organization. Michigan Audubon's commitment to birds continues in the form of organized bird-related data collection by a community of "citizen scientists." Likewise, the organization educates thousands of bird watchers each year through a series of educational programs and events.

Currently, Michigan Audubon maintains a membership of over 2,500 individuals and businesses and 32 active local chapters of Michigan Audubon statewide.

Michigan Audubon protects nearly 4,000 acres of important wildlife habitat in 18 sanctuaries in the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. Rivers, lakes, marshes, bogs, fens, grasslands, hardwoods, and northern conifer communities are found in these protected areas. These lands not only serve as a refuge for many species of wildlife, but they also preserve a wide range of our state's valuable natural resources and are used for recreation, education, and research. Michigan Audubon is a partner in the Important Bird Areas program which identifies significant tracts of bird habitat which may need protection for the sustainability of threatened and endangered bird populations.
