TASTE OF LINCOLN AVE

Please join us at the Taste of Lincoln Ave festival on July 25 &/or July 26! We are Heshima Kenya: a non-profit organization committed to empowering refugee women. Our entire program consists of a holistic model -- education, safe housing, parental skills, and self-sufficiency. Our Maisha Collective is a branch of Heshima Kenya which teaches these young women how to hand-make and hand-dye scarves which we then sell in the U.S. This gives them the opportunity to work and gain income. All of the proceeds from these scarves are given back to the women and the program in Kenya. We sell our scarves from two platforms: our online etsy shop and through events in the Chicagoland area. Your responsibilities as a volunteer would be to encourage people to buy our scarves, share our mission, and cash handling/credit card sales. You would not only help us out a LOT on the day of the festival, but you would go home feeling great about yourself because you helped make a change. You can change the world -- it starts with you!

Thank you!

About Heshima Kenya

Mission Statement

Heshima Kenya specializes in identifying and protecting unaccompanied and separated refugee children and youth, especially girls, young women and their children living in Nairobi, Kenya. Our shelter, education and community outreach services, coupled with local resources and the refugee community, empower this population to live healthy lives. By providing resources for long-term support, these girls and young women become catalysts for strengthening networks creating sustainable change within the local and global communities.

Description

Heshima Kenya, a nonprofit organization operating in Nairobi, Kenya, is the first organization in Kenya devoted to protecting unaccompanied and separated refugee children and youth, with a special focus in supporting women and girls ages 13 to 23 years old from Somalia, Ethiopia, DR Congo, Sudan, Rwanda, and Burundi.

We provide shelter, education, vocational training, case management support, and advocacy to participants and their children who have experienced the detrimental effects of war, the loss of their families, and, in many cases, kidnapping, rape, trafficking, unlawful detainment, and torture.

We also mobilize members of the refugee community through educational outreach. At the core of Heshima Kenya’s model is the creation of a social network that empowers girls and young women to strive for economic self-sufficiency and become community leaders in their own right.
