Heshima Kenya

Please join us at Randolph St. Market in the sales of our hand-made scarves. Each scarf we sell helps empower a young refugee woman in Nairobi, Kenya. We are Heshima Kenya -- a non-profit organization that empowers refugee women from all over Africa. Women get access to safe housing, parenting skills, education and self-sufficiency. In our Maisha Collective, women learn how to make scarves using traditional African dying techniques which we then sell in the U.S. out of Chicago. We have an online store, but most of our revenue comes from selling at events, like Randolph St. Market! With your help, we can make a change. You will not only be selling scarves, exchanging money, and helping us spread our mission, but you will be empowering a woman to be independent and self-sufficient. All proceeds go back to the program and the women who make the scarves recieve a 100$ stipend each month to earn income. Randolph St. Market is a festival filled with crafts, food, family and friends! Many unique vendors come to the festival each year. Please be a part of this -- our volunteers are the heart of Heshima Kenya and are extremely helpful.

About Heshima Kenya

Location:

Mission Statement

Heshima Kenya specializes in identifying and protecting unaccompanied and separated refugee children and youth, especially girls, young women and their children living in Nairobi, Kenya. Our shelter, education and community outreach services, coupled with local resources and the refugee community, empower this population to live healthy lives. By providing resources for long-term support, these girls and young women become catalysts for strengthening networks creating sustainable change within the local and global communities.

Description

Heshima Kenya, a nonprofit organization operating in Nairobi, Kenya, is the first organization in Kenya devoted to protecting unaccompanied and separated refugee children and youth, with a special focus in supporting women and girls ages 13 to 23 years old from Somalia, Ethiopia, DR Congo, Sudan, Rwanda, and Burundi.

We provide shelter, education, vocational training, case management support, and advocacy to participants and their children who have experienced the detrimental effects of war, the loss of their families, and, in many cases, kidnapping, rape, trafficking, unlawful detainment, and torture.

We also mobilize members of the refugee community through educational outreach. At the core of Heshima Kenya’s model is the creation of a social network that empowers girls and young women to strive for economic self-sufficiency and become community leaders in their own right.
