The mission of Cancer Support Community, Benjamin Center is to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community. Our programs include educational workshops, mind-body, stress reduction & exercise classes, group support & networking, individual counseling, and social gatherings. All programs and services are provided free of charge.

We are looking for several volunteers to act as backup for our Front Desk Receptionists, working in our beautiful facility in West Los Angeles. When one of the Volunteer Receptionists has to cancel, we will call persons on the backup list and ask one of them to fill in the empty 2-3 hour shift.

We call the Front Desk Receptionist volunteers our "Directors of First Impressions" because the role they play is so critical to our members. Each volunteer spends a few hours a week (2-3 hour shifts) doing the following tasks:

  • Greeting visitors
  • Providing telephone callers with information about our programs
  • Directing calls to the appropriate staff person in the office
  • Assisting with mailings as needed.

We are looking for persons with excellent social skills who are comfortable working around people with cancer. Other requirements include:

  • Excellent phone skills
  • Computer skills are highly desirable
  • Must have neat, presentable appearance
  • Must be friendly and polite
  • Must be organized
  • Must be reliable and conscientious about working assigned dates/times. We recognize that sometimes a volunteer must cancel, but we request advance notice so we can find a backup.
If you are interested in volunteering in this or other positions at Cancer Support Community, please contact us at ibeal@earthlink.net.

Mission Statement

The mission of Cancer Support Community Los Angeles is to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community. All programs and services are provided at no cost to participants.

Description

Founded in 1982 by Harold Benjamin, Ph.D., Cancer Support Community Los Angeles (CSC-LA) pioneered the use of psychosocial support to help improve quality of life for people affected by cancer. CSC has grown to be the largest cancer support organization worldwide with nearly 50 affiliates, over 100 satellite locations, and three international centers.

Every aspect of our program -- support groups, educational workshops, stress reduction and exercise programs, short-term counseling, and social activities -- is grounded in evidenced-based research that validates effectiveness in diminishing distress and improving quality of life for people with cancer and caregivers.

Through our programs, people affected by cancer learn vital skills that enable them to regain control, reduce feelings of isolation and restore hope, regardless of the stage of their disease.

Our service area includes West Los Angeles, Central Los Angeles, downtown Los Angeles, South Los Angeles, East Los Angeles, and parts of the San Fernando Valley.

Recognized for more than 30 years for our service in the greater Los Angeles community, CSC-LA is known for providing the most comprehensive program of psychosocial support to people with cancer and their families. As always, all of our services are provided completely free of charge.
