Construction volunteers will assist in teaching construction skills to formerly incarcerated young men, from electrical wiring to painting to plumbing and beyond! Your participation in this part of the Brick by Brick program guarantees that these young men will have the skillset needed to obtain a job at the end of the program, and it could help provide a meaningful career path to individuals who are serious about turning their lives around.

About Roots of Renewal

Location:

1000 N Broad Street, New Orleans, LA 70119, US

Mission Statement

Roots of Renewal is a startup non-profit committed to holistic solutions for the root causes of violence and poverty, including reintegrating formerly incarcerated neighbors back into their community. It is dedicated to increasing access to services and employment in Central City, creating equality of opportunity, reducing violence, and promoting peace. Eventually, Roots of Renewal hopes to see Central City be released from its entanglement in cycles of violence and crime and be revitalized.

Description

The initial Brick by Brick project, set to launch September 1, 2015, is a reintegration program that also addresses neighborhood needs. Roots of Renewal will buy a blighted property in the Central City neighborhood and employ returning neighbors aged 18 to 24 to renovate this property. Over the course of four months, the clients will spend time learning valuable job skills in construction. Perhaps more importantly, they will spend this time learning the soft skills that are necessary for any job, such as timeliness, teamwork, and workplace etiquette. The participants will also be referred to other existing organizations for drug treatment, GED classes, mental health needs, and other necessary services to ensure successful reintegration.
