--------------------Heshima Kenya-----------------------

We are an organization that helps young refugee women in Africa build sustainable lifestyles. Through our holistic model, these women learn parenting skills, general education, have access to safe housing, and have opportunities to work. The Maisha Collective is a line of beautiful scarves that the women in Kenya hand-dye and make. We then sell the scarves in the U.S. (out of Chicago) All of the proceeds go back to the program and back to the women so that they can earn income.

Please help us July 18th and 19th at Sheffield Music Festival & Garden Walk! This traditional Lincoln Park festival brings a community together to celebrate summer. You will help us sell scarves at this event. You will help us spread our holistic model and support Heshima Kenya. You will be making a change in young girls' lives! You will have fun listening to the music and sounds of the festival while explaining our mission to others and helping us sell the scarves. Thank you!

About Heshima Kenya

Location:

1111 N WELLS STREET, CHICAGO, IL 60610, US

Mission Statement

Heshima Kenya specializes in identifying and protecting unaccompanied and separated refugee children and youth, especially girls, young women and their children living in Nairobi, Kenya. Our shelter, education and community outreach services, coupled with local resources and the refugee community, empower this population to live healthy lives. By providing resources for long-term support, these girls and young women become catalysts for strengthening networks creating sustainable change within the local and global communities.

Description

Heshima Kenya, a nonprofit organization operating in Nairobi, Kenya, is the first organization in Kenya devoted to protecting unaccompanied and separated refugee children and youth, with a special focus in supporting women and girls ages 13 to 23 years old from Somalia, Ethiopia, DR Congo, Sudan, Rwanda, and Burundi.

We provide shelter, education, vocational training, case management support, and advocacy to participants and their children who have experienced the detrimental effects of war, the loss of their families, and, in many cases, kidnapping, rape, trafficking, unlawful detainment, and torture.

We also mobilize members of the refugee community through educational outreach. At the core of Heshima Kenya’s model is the creation of a social network that empowers girls and young women to strive for economic self-sufficiency and become community leaders in their own right.
