Please help us sell our beautiful, one-of-a-kind scarves at the Taste of River North festival! We are Heshima Kenya, a non-for-profit organization that helps young refugee women in Nairobi, Kenya build sustainable and independent lifestyles. The young women come to the program and we provide them with safe housing, education, parental guidance, and more. In our Maisha Collective, we teach the young women how to make scarves which we then sell in the U.S. All of the proceeds go back to our program and to the women who make the scarves so that they can start to pay their own bills, housing, etc. You can make a difference in a woman's life just by helping us sell scarves at the festival! About Heshima Kenya

Location:

1111 N WELLS STREET, CHICAGO, IL 60610, US

Mission Statement

Heshima Kenya specializes in identifying and protecting unaccompanied and separated refugee children and youth, especially girls, young women and their children living in Nairobi, Kenya. Our shelter, education and community outreach services, coupled with local resources and the refugee community, empower this population to live healthy lives. By providing resources for long-term support, these girls and young women become catalysts for strengthening networks creating sustainable change within the local and global communities.

Description

Heshima Kenya, a nonprofit organization operating in Nairobi, Kenya, is the first organization in Kenya devoted to protecting unaccompanied and separated refugee children and youth, with a special focus in supporting women and girls ages 13 to 23 years old from Somalia, Ethiopia, DR Congo, Sudan, Rwanda, and Burundi.

We provide shelter, education, vocational training, case management support, and advocacy to participants and their children who have experienced the detrimental effects of war, the loss of their families, and, in many cases, kidnapping, rape, trafficking, unlawful detainment, and torture.

We also mobilize members of the refugee community through educational outreach. At the core of Heshima Kenya’s model is the creation of a social network that empowers girls and young women to strive for economic self-sufficiency and become community leaders in their own right.
