Join the National Park Service, and NYC H2O for a volunteer beach cleanup at Canarsie Beach , Brooklyn!
We will begin the cleanup at low-tide and see the shell fish that the Lenape native Americans, mistakenly identified as the "Canarsee" tribe, once used for to make wampum, whilst keeping an eye out for Captain Kidd's treasure. Legend has it that he buried it on Canarsie Beach as well as on Gardiner's Island. We will also explain the history that shaped the pier and the unrealized plans to develop Jamaica Bay into the major port for NYC.
The cleanup will run from 9am to 12pm. Optional bus transportation to Carnarsie Beach will be provided from Union Square in Manhattan (space is limited) - the bus will depart at 9am and will return to Union Square after the cleanup.
Registration is required - please sign up here.More opportunities with NYC H2O

Mission Statement
NYC H2O’s mission is to inspire and educate New Yorkers of all ages to learn about, enjoy and protect their city’s local water ecology. Through providing public and school programs at historic reservoirs, parklands, watersheds, bays, rivers, and wetlands, we encourage diverse citizens to advocate for responsible public policy. Our activities promote science-based knowledge of New York’s local ecosystems and of what is needed for urban water resilience in a time when climate change impact continues to escalate.
Description
NYC H2O is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides educational programs on New York City’s urban water system and ecology to school groups and the public.
NYC H2O was founded in 2009 with the intent of providing educational programs about NYC’s water system and nature to school groups. Founder Matt Malina saw the educational value in getting kids outside to interactive water infrastructure sites. Over the last seven years, we have offered 140 educational programs focused on NYC’s water system and ecology to a combined audience of 4,500 people. This audience has included dozens of engineers, city planners, and professors, attesting to the quality and informational rigor of the programs. Events have included public lectures on infrastructure and water conservation, beach cleanups, bike, walking and reservoir tours in NYC, hikes upstate, educational, guided paddling trips in the Catskill watershed, and sewage plant tours.
