Are you passionate about learning more about the marine environment? Do you want to learn more and share that knowledge with those around you? Join the Seattle Aquarium's Habitat Interpretation Volunteer team and expand your expertise about what is living in the ocean and how you can work to conserve our one world ocean!

Habitat interpretation is a task shared by all volunteers and staff at the Aquarium. As an Interpreter you share your enthusiasm and the stories of our animals with Aquarium visitors.

Aquarium volunteers receive extensive training about our marine animals and interpretive communication techniques. The minimum time requirement for Aquarium interpreters is four hours every week for six months; shifts begin at 9am, 11am and 2pm seven days per week.

We are currently seeking adults 18 and older to join us for our next New Volunteer Orientation on Saturday, April 15 from 10a-11:30am or Tuesday, April 18 from 6pm to 7:30pm to learn more about our volunteer opportunities and begin the process. Please see http://www.seattleaquarium.org/adult-volunteers for more information and to register.

Regarding COVID-19:
Open daily, the Aquarium prioritizes health and safety for our staff and visitors, embracing science to guide our operations. We maintain high standards of cleanliness and all high-touch surfaces (like windows, railings, restrooms and elevators) are continuously cleaned.

Please note, all Aquarium staff and volunteers must provide proof of vaccination or approved medical or religious exemption by date of hire. If you have questions about this policy or for information regarding the exemption process, please contact the volunteer engagement office at volunteers@seattleaquarium.org.

Mission Statement

"Inspiring Conservation of Our Marine Environment"

Description

The Seattle Aquarium is the ninth largest aquarium in the U.S. by attendance and among the top five paid visitor attractions in the Puget Sound region. Since our opening, we’ve hosted over 22 million visitors and provided marine conservation education to over 1.6 million school children. We’re proud to be accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Opened in 1977, the Seattle Aquarium was owned and operated by the City of Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation until 2010, when the nonprofit Seattle Aquarium Society assumed its management--a model used by most leading zoos and aquariums across the country. In 2007, the Aquarium opened a major expansion that added 18,000 square feet of space to the facility, including an impressive 120,000-gallon exhibit, a gift shop, café, meeting/event space and more.

Currently, the Aquarium’s animal collection is housed within six major exhibits: Window on Washington Waters, Life on the Edge, Pacific Coral Reef, Birds & Shores, the Underwater Dome and Marine Mammals. The renovation of our harbor seal exhibit, set to open in June of 2013, is the first step in our 20-year strategic plan, which includes a goal of doubling our physical size and becoming the centerpiece of the City’s revitalized waterfront.

Our mission, Inspiring Conservation of Our Marine Environment, is reflected in everything we do--exhibits, events, conservation and education programs, research activities and more. This important work wouldn’t be possible without support from our community, members, staff and volunteers. Click the following links to learn more about making a donation in support of our mission, becoming a member of the Seattle Aquarium, or joining the ranks of our dedicated volunteers!

The Seattle Aquarium operates as a nonprofit 501c3, through a long-term operating agreement with the City of Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation.
