Orange Literacy is partnering with the Orange County Family Success Alliance to offer a special Kindergarten Readiness program for children who will start kindergarten in the fall, and who have not been enrolled in a preschool program or who could benefit from additional pre-Kindergarten preparation. This program will give them a jump start by giving them extra time to become accustomed to following the classroom schedule and routine, being separated from their parents, following directions of a teacher and working together with their classmates. Orange Literacy will offer classes for parents of these rising kindergartners, and we are looking for volunteer tutors to teach these classes.
We will offer the parental literacy classes during the summer and continuing into the fall semester (through December). The classes will focus on helping parents improve their English skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) as well as teaching them how they can help their children succeed in school. English instruction will be contextualized around helping their children to be successful in school, including communicating with teachers, understanding school policies and procedures and helping with homework.
Class Details:
Classes will meet twice weekly for 1.5-2 hours each session from July-December with occasional breaks for teacher workdays and holidays. Tutors should expect to volunteer 4-6 hours per week, including prep and travel time. No prior teaching or tutor experience is necessary, and a second language is not required. All training and materials will be provided. Ideally, volunteers would be available to begin teaching these classes in July and continue through the class end in December, however, volunteers only available for part of the time will be considered. Classes will be small with no more than 6 students per class.
Classes will be held at three locations throughout Orange County: Carrboro Elementary School in Carrboro, Frank Porter Graham Elementary School in Chapel Hill, and New Hope Elementary School between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough. The exact days and times that classes will be held are TBD. If you have any interest in teaching these classes, please follow the application instructions below, and we will contact you when the days/times are announced to see if they will work for your schedule.
If you are interested in this opportunity or would like more information, please contact Joy Turner at jturner@orangeliteracy.org or 919-914-6153.
