WHEN: 1pm, Friday, October 30th

WHERE: 258 W A Street, Hayward

WHAT: Volunteer Orientation, where we will discuss BOSS, the South County Housing Program (SCHP) and how you might be able to help.

POSITION: Administration & Reception

The South County Homeless Project needs volunteer(s) to assist with basic administrative and reception duties that include, but may not be strictly limited to the following:

  • Answer phones
    • Answer questions,
    • Forward to individual,
    • Take messages
  • Light filing
  • Greet visitors
  • Sorting supplies
    • Office
    • Cleaning
    • Bedding

DAYS/TIMES

We are looking for individuals, 18 years of age or older who can assist us anytime Monday through Friday between 10am and 5pm, Due to the time investment of BOSS staff associated with teaching new volunteers, we request a minimum 3 month commitment from any and all volunteers.

The South County shelter is an emergency placement shelter for the City of Hayward and the County of Alameda. Many of our residents are hard to place and typically have addiction, mental health, or other circumstances which make it difficult for them to find long-term housing. This special population needs staff and volunteers who are sensitive to their needs and situations.

Description

Since 1971 BOSS has provided housing and services to over 1,500 homeless people each year. We have programs for both single adults and families with children. Most BOSS participants are dealing with multiple challenges: mental illness, substance abuse, domestic violence, illiteracy, lack of job skills, social isolation, trauma, and entrenched feelings of exhaustion and hopelessness. BOSS programs focus on teaching life skills, connecting people with community resources, and creating supportive and positive environments that motivate people and build hope.

Our services address 4 areas:
- HOUSING: Shelter, transitional/special needs housing, permanent housing assistance.
- HEALTH: Physical and mental health services, medication monitoring, drug/alcohol recovery counseling, socialization, case management for the seriously mentally ill.
- ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: Job readiness assessments, resume-building, job search assistance, job development with employers, job creation, adult education.
- SOCIAL JUSTICE: Community building, leadership development, and collaborative action campaigns on targeted policy goals.
