A Free Bird is a 501(C)(3)non-profit organization based in New York City. Our focus is to provide children, ages 4-18 who are patients or survivors of juvenile cancer, the opportunity to explore their artistic passions and give them the strength to fight their disease. We believe that artistic expression is critical for healing! A Free Bird supports children affected by cancer in their exploration of art, music, acting, poetry, writing, singing and any other artistic passion they may have.


Responsibilities:

Develop and implement a therapeutic arts program for children to alleviate stress, anxiety and fears for proper growth and development to continue. Meeting the psychosocial needs of children and their families and provide emotional support.


Overall Responsibilities:

-Assist in the planning of AFB art programs.

-Coordinate, facilitate and evaluate all program activities for patients (infant through adolescent) through AFB Programming.

-Must have a total number of 10,000+ hours of service, as well as degree being able to help administer and sign off on students paperwork.

-Planning special events for patients such as holiday dinners, birthday parties, etc.

-Provide appropriate care for patients to meet their psychosocial needs.

-Keeping children’s families informed about their children’s progress in the program.

-Demonstrate ability to provide comprehensive, cost effective, and meaningful healthcare.

-Work with, mentor, and supervise child life volunteers and interns.

-Must support and maintain mission goal and statement of organization.


Competencies:

-Has a degree in Child Life, Child Development, Family Studies, Education, or related fields.

-Experience, interest and comfortable in working with pediatric patients.

-Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.

-Knowledge of CPR and first aid assistance.

-Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
