The Valley Hi-Laguna Branch of the Sacramento Public Library is looking for an outgoing, "people person" to help with their Summer Reading Outreach efforts!
Summer Reading is an annual celebration of reading across the country from June 1 to Aug. 31. This year, Sacramento Public Library invites you to "Read to the Rhythm" with prizes, music-themed events and more. Throughout the system we’ll be hosting bands like The Poodlums and Musical Robot, along with an all-ages concert series.
Summer Reading fights the "summer slide," when students who don’t read during the summer lose up two months of the reading skills from the previous school year.
And we need a volunteer to attend outreach events and get the word out about our 2015 Summer Reading Program!
Volunteering for this position will possibly look like...
- Fairs/Festivals/Socials: Picking up the outreach "stuff" from the library, driving to the event, setting up a table with SPL Summer Reading Information and prizes, talking to people about the Summer Reading Program, signing everyone up for summer reading and getting them excited to win prizes, cleaning up the table and returning the "stuff' back the the library. Oh, and HAVING FUN!!
- School/Camp Programs: Picking up the outreach "stuff" from the library, driving to the event, giving a presentation about summer reading, possibly reading a book aloud (if comfortable doing so), signing everyone up for summer reading and getting them excited to win prizes, packing up and returning the "stuff' back the library. Oh, and HAVING MORE FUN!!
- Other Opportunities: There may be time when you will accompany a librarian at an event and others when you attend/help out with an in-library Summer Reading program.
The ideal candidate for this position would be someone who is a Sacramento Public Library RAVING FAN/CHEERLEADER, someone who is well spoken, friendly, approachable and enjoys talking with people, especially children.
