Bring Enjoyment to a Girl's Summer @ Camp Starfish

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital

Come spend a week having fun with girls as they go "Under the Sea" at Camp Starfish. Girls will get a taste of Girl Scouting and will participate in fun activities such as: healthy living, arts & crafts, S.T.E.M., creative arts, and friendship building!

The Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital hosts day camp for girls across the DMV region. At camp, girls who are not currently Girl Scouts have the chance to experience the great outdoors, learn the key components of building healthy relationships, and have a ton of fun. Current Girl Scouts in middle and high school are able to hone their leadership skills by developing and running activity centers.

Adult volunteers (ages 18 and up) are needed as camp chaperones. Adults at camp are assigned to a unit of approximately 20 girls of the same age (between kindergarten and 5th grade). Each unit has 2-3 teen program aides to help and to encourage the campers. The role of adults at camp is to ensure that the girls are safe at all times and to encourage the teen program aides to be the best leaders they can be. Adults will stay with their assigned group throughout the day as the campers travel from station to station.

Additional adult volunteer roles include:

  • Bus Chaperones: Ensures the safety of the girls while on the bus. This individual rides the bus from the first top to camp, and from camp to the very last stop.
  • Bus Monitors: Ensures the girls are safe at the bus stop prior to the bus arriving.

Camp Starfish runs from 9 am to 3 pm beginning June 29 (Monday) through July 2 (Thursday) at the Katherine Thomas School in Rockville, MD at 9975 Medical Center Drive. If you cannot commit to the full week of camp, don’t worry! We encourage volunteers to stay the full week or just a few days (whatever works best with your schedule)!

First Aid/CPR NOT required, but it is great if you have it! If you do not have a car, we have bus stops around the area. Please email (alavant@gscnc.org) or call 202-534-3791 with any questions.

Mission Statement

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. We seek to accomplish this by providing girls opportunities to develop their potential and have fun with their peers in a supportive, all-girl setting.

Description

Founded in 1912, Girl Scouts of the USA is the preeminent organization for girls with a current membership of 3.6 million girls and adults. Volunteers use their expertise, skills, interests, and life experience to shape fun and enriching leadership experiences for girls, and inspire them to reach their personal best. Volunteers help council staff facilitate the New Girl Scout Leadership Experience to girls through exciting program opportunities: leadership/self-esteem, financial literacy, travel, health/wellness, science, technology, engineering, and math. Volunteers choose from several flexible Pathways (the ways that girls and adults join Girl Scouting) that fit their lifestyles, including short-term or long-term service working either directly or indirectly with girls, and they can participate regionally, nationally, and internationally.
