ORGANIZATION: Rockwood Housing Commission

We are a low income housing unit with approximately 37 kids/teens. We are trying to put together a class or classes for computers/web design/programmin etc. and we are looking for volunteers to teach these classes. The goal is to educate the children and encourage them to further that education so they can plan a career as they grow up. These classes would revolve around the volunteer's schedule and availability.

Description

One project is building and planting a community garden. We are going from no garden to a large garden with 9 beds 6'x24' and 18" high. We are building 8 beds from Cedar wood and one center garden with decorative cement bricks. The gardens will need to be filled with dirt and then work with the residents to plant both seeds and starter plants. The garden is planned to be a community garden where the food will be given free to any of the residents and the extra will be donated to the St. Mary's Food Pantry "The Giving Basket" Many of our residents take food from there and we are planning on growing 2 x what they could eat so our residents can have the opportunity to plant, tend and harvest then give back.

The second project is removing the landscaping around the 5 building complex. We had a landscape architect design a new plan that calls for the majority of the existing trees and shrubs to be removed. For this second project we have a commitment from the Carlson Football team and we are excited to partner with them. They will tear out the current landscaping and we can save a lot of money that could be used for the residents in other areas.

The third project is the playground improvement.
Repainting the existing playground which has become dull with some pealing paint. It also has some graffiti.

All Three projects are designed for our residents and community partners to work together.
