For 50 years, the most important innovations that have transformed global ophthalmology have come from one place - the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. While we are honored to be ranked the nations' #1 ophthalmology program, it is our patients who benefit from our expertise.

The quality of patient care is our prime responsibility. Bascom Palmer patients receive unsurpassed eye care ranging from routine eye examinations to highly specialized diagnosis and treatment. Our patients range in age from infants to seniors, and many travel great distances to receive care unavailable in other parts of the world.

The future of ophthalmology lies in the discovery of new knowledge and technology, from the research laboratories to its rapid translation into clinical care. Current areas of clinical research include macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, artificial cornea development, ocular infections and cancers of the eye. Translational research projects in genomics, stem cells, gene therapy, and nanoparticles present new clinical opportunities. Bascom Palmer’s physicians have participated in landmark clinical studies:

• Developed effective treatments for macular degeneration

• Lead to the prevention of glaucoma in some patients

• Improved outcomes for patients with diabetic retinopathy

Our multidisciplinary research program covers a broad spectrum, from the most basic investigation into the nature of molecules, cells and tissues, to the development of devices for clinical and surgical applications. With its robust scientific rsearch programs and biomedical inventions, Bascom Palmer will continue to lead the field of ophthalmology in the 21st century.

We regard the education of our ophthalmology residents, fellows and ophthalmologists from around the world as one of our highest priorities, to ensure that the vision needs of future generations are met. Our residency program is regarded as the best in the nation. More than 40 graduates of training programs have become ophthalmology department chairs at medical schools and teaching hospitals throughout the world.

In 2004, the Bascom Palmer Vision Van was donated to the Institute by the Josephine Leiser Foundation. The 40-foot, mobile, self-contained eye clinic is a tool for reaching underserved populations in South-Florida. Over 1,500 examinations are conducted by the van yearly.

Initially conceived to serve the South Florida population the outreach now extends to Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America. The Vision Van is sent to areas in need of emergency medial service after natural disasters.
