ORGANIZATION: Northern Virginia Family Service

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Join NVFS as we celebrate Do More 24™ a local movement that brings together nonprofit organizations, companies, and people committed to making a difference. Volunteers are needed to help our young clients combat the dreaded "summer slide", by filling and decorating a shoebox for a youth in our shelter or mentoring programs. These shoeboxes will help lessen or stop the effects of summer learning loss.

Boxes should be filled and decorated for children between 5 and 13 years of age. A list of suggested items for the boxes can be found below and are readily available at most Dollar Stores. A majority of the items can be purchased at your local Dollar Store.

Suggested Items for Summer Slide Shoebox:

  • Your favorite childhood book
  • Journal
  • A list of your Top 10 Free and Easy Summer Activities from when you were a kid
  • Kid’s magazine
  • Math Flash Cards
  • Seeds for planting
  • A Word A Day Calendar- repurpose that extra calendar you received in the mail and fill each day with a new and challenging word
  • Puzzles
  • Activity book with stickers
  • Activity Dough
  • Educational workbooks
  • Teaching Tree assorted worksheets
  • Motivational pencils
  • Bookmarks

If you’re interested in volunteering on-site or virtually, please contact Alyssa Lee at alee@nvfs.org
