Heartland Hospice invites all students studying in the heathcare field to apply for our Fall Semester Internship program at Heartland Hospice. This program gives students the ability to learn more about the hospice field, healthcare issues, and company operations. Each intern will work directly with the Volunteer Coordinator throughout the internship experience. Some tasks that the intern will be responsible for are:

Office Projects/Tasks

  • Attend IDT, QUAPI, All Staff, and GROWTH meetings
  • Create and maintain nursing, admit, discharge, transfer, and volunteer packets
  • Drop file patient records for accurate chart filing
  • Call potential volunteers/ references
  • Update Bereavement/Volunteer bulletin board
  • Update Memorial Board & Self-care board
  • Plan and organize Annual Memorial Walk from the Heartland Hospice Memorial Fund
  • Recruit and monitor the Vigil and Veteran programs
  • Complete trainings with new recruits
  • Organize and file office invoices per Office Manager’s request
  • Update Physician Signature Log
  • Audit personnel files
  • Complete other tasks as assigned

Field Tasks

  • Provide companionship and emotional support to patients with a life expectancy of 6 months or less
  • Provide respite relief to families who require additional support
  • Schedule and follow each discipline in hospice on a regular basis
  • Organize and assist in company events/ community fairs
  • Assist Account Liaisons with activities in facilities
  • Assist in volunteer recruitment in various areas
  • Complete other tasks as assigned

Students are required to work though a school requirement for internship placement. Schools that we have worked with before are Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Baker College, and Madonna University.

Heartland Hospice provides quality care to patients with a limited life expectancy, as well as support to their families and caregivers. Formerly known as ProMedica Hospice, Heartland enhances the quality of life of those we serve through palliative and specialized supportive care designed to meet the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of the patients and caregivers. Hospice care is provided by using an interdisciplinary approach in delivering care to patients--either in their own homes or extended care facilities--while working cooperatively with other health care providers and other community resources. Heartland Hospice strives to provide care to all who are eligible and need hospice care irrespective of ability to pay. Heartland is part of Gentiva Health Services.

Description

Heartland Hospice serves patients in Washtenaw, Livingston, Wayne, Oakland, Lenawee, Jackson and Ingham Counties in Michigan.

Hospice supports, cares for and comforts patients in the final stages of life, as well helping as their families. Heartland serves patients wherever they call home, whether it is a private home or a nursing home or another facility. Hospice includes palliative care by nurses, as well as counseling for patient and family, and pastoral or spiritual support.

Hospice volunteers help patients and families by providing companionship, respite care and emotional or spiritual support, depending on the patient's needs.
