Sanctuary Stitchers -- Volunteer your Knitting and Crochet Skills

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services

We are seeking crocheters and knitters to make blanket squares for children in need of comfort, warmth and love. Volunteer Services and the Sanctuary Project at JBFCS have begun a project to provide all children who leave the residential treatment programs with a hand-made blanket. The children in our programs have had lives filled with trauma, violence, poverty and other stressors. The purpose of giving a Sanctuary blanket to each child who leaves our residential programs is to help them transition from one home to the next. We hope the blanket will remind them of the good things they experienced here, and provide comfort in their new life.

We need your help to make this possible! If you are interested in making blanket squares by yourself, starting a group with friends, co-workers or in your school, or simply learning more about our project, contact us and we will send you all the information regarding patterns and needle sizes. We also welcome donations of size 7 knitting needles, size G crochet hooks and worsted weight acrylic yarn for our Monthly Knitting Get-Togethers involving JBFCS staff, volunteers and clients. For more information visit our website at www.sanctuarystitchers.org.

Mission Statement

JBFCS serves over 55,000 New Yorkers annually from all religious, ethnic, and economic backgrounds through a comprehensive range of 175 community-based programs, residential facilities, and day-treatment centers. Our work is built upon the professionalism and compassion of 2,200 employees, including professional social workers, licensed psychologists, and psychiatrists, as well as a cadre of clinical support personnel in continuing day treatment and residential treatment centers. A corps of 800 dedicated volunteers work with our staff to help ease the burdens that strain and disrupt the lives of our clients.

Description

What began over a century ago as a network of volunteers bringing food and clothing to poor Jewish families is now one of the nation's largest and most comprehensive mental health and social service agencies. Leaders in the field of human services, we proudly serve people of all faiths, races and cultures promoting well-being, resilience and self-sufficiency for individuals and families at every stage of life. Service defines us best. Every night of the year, more than 1,000 men, women and children sleep in residences under our care. Every week of the year, more than 2,500 people receive counseling from professionals on our staff . JBFCS, a beneficiary of the UJA-Federation of New York, is a place of clinical excellence and compassionate care: For the mother and her children seeking refuge from domestic violence. For the family coping with caring for a developmentally disabled child. For the parent facing depression and despair following job loss. For the couple struggling to maintain a loving relationship. For the toddler showing early signs of developmental delays. For the child bearing the trauma of abuse and neglect. For the teen grappling with the challenges of mental illness and becoming a productive young adult. For the older adult fighting depression and anxiety related to age and loss. Whatever the stage of life, whatever the overwhelming stress may be, JBFCS represents this city's most experienced first line of response.
