Volunteers will assist case managers in the Refugee Resettlement program. This Program resttles approximately 150-200 Refugees each year. Many refugees are arriving from Somalia, Iraq,Syria, Columbia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Resettlement means refugees are given the opportunity to start a new life for themelves in the US. Volunteers will help in all aspects of this resettlement from setting up housing, meeting refugees at the airport, orienting them to their new home, assisting refugees in navigating their new community with the ultimate goal of self sufficiency. Volunteers may teach clients to take the bus to medical appointments, help them request an interpreter, fill out registration forms and how to fill prescriptions. The volunteer may visit the client in their home, help organize and deal with incoming mail, accompany the client to the Clothing Collaborative to obtain free clothing. Assist client with understanding bills. These are some examples of how the volunteer will help.

Description

Dorcas International Institute is a full-service Adult and Family Learning Center. We offer a wide variety of learning experiences including ESOL, Adult Basic Education, Citizenship, Refugee and Resettlement, Immigration Services, GED Training, and Family Literacy Programs.

In addition to these offerings, we run a Gateway to College Program through CCRI for students entering college for the first time and a Career Academy and Job Center that provides students with real-life job training and opportunities for employment.

Finally, our campus building on Elmwood Avenue houses the state Clothing Collaborative, providing work-appropriate clothing to people entering or renentering the workforce and a Learning Resource Center/Worklab that provides computer access and tutoring for eligible adults.
