Reading proficiency by third grade is one of the most important predictors of high school graduation and career success. Despite that, 67 percent of children nationwide, more than 80 percent of those from low-income families, are not proficient readers by the end of third grade.
Our program Reading Corps seeks to address this issue by inspiring a love of reading early on in a child's education. Our volunteer Reading Buddies are paired with students in pre-K through 2nd grade to engage them in basic reading and writing activities for an hour once or twice a week - a small but incredibly impactful commitment that can make a significant difference in the lives and development of these children.
