Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) seeks an AmeriCorps Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA) member to join its staff as a Mentor Coordinator in the Hampton Roads office. VISTA members commit to serve full-time for one year at a nonprofit organization or local government agency, working to fight poverty and build the agency’s capacity.
The VISTA member will join the BBBS team in coordinating high quality mentoring services for children of military service members. This role will include supervising a school-based mentoring program; cultivating community partnerships; recruiting, interviewing and enrolling potential volunteers; interviewing children and creating matches based on mutual interests; providing ongoing monthly support to mentors and mentees to ensure child safety and create positive impacts for youth; and building constructive and satisfying relationships between youth and volunteers.
The ideal candidate will be a motivated self-starter and will bring energy, enthusiasm, patience, persistence, strong oral and written communication skills, ability to work with diverse populations, commitment to the ethic of service and passion for serving youth.
Previous social services experience a plus. The VISTA member must have a car and a valid driver’s license. Bachelor’s degree REQUIRED. Position is full time, 40 hrs/week, located in Norfolk, VA.
VISTA members receive $11, 676 annual stipend with a $5,500 education award or a $1500 cash stipend presented at the end of a year of service as well as intensive training and professional development through CNCS and by the Virginia Mentoring Partnership. Health benefits, child care, life insurance and some relocation expenses available.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hampton Roads is seeking adult volunteers to be caring, consistent and compassionate mentors. Mentors provide one-to-one individualized time and attention to a military affiliated child in their community or school. Bigs and Littles are matched based on shared interests and compatible personalities. In just a few hours a month you can be a positive role model, provide valuable support and encouragement, and give your Little the invaluable gift of your friendship. You will receive professional coaching to ensure that both you and your Little have a successful match.
