Position Summary:
- Assist elementary and/or high school students with homework and other academic needs; Assist with or lead enrichment activities; serve as an adult role-model for students in an ongoing one-on-one capacity.
- This position is expected to support the creation of "community" through development of positive, cooperative relationships with students, school staff and other volunteers.
Primary Roles & Responsibilities:
- Assist students with Homework or any other academic support/enrichment from approximately 4:00 pm to approximately 9:00 pm--in approximately per volunteer session
- Lead a project-based cooperative learning group during the school day or after school hours
- Help answer students’ questions as they are working through the class material and projects
- Support individual student academic needs as assigned
- Lead literacy circles as assigned
- Serve as a consistent mentor for an assigned student throughout the course of one school year in group mentoring or one-to-one planned activities.
- Tutoring and Mentoring may also aid programs such as GED instruction

To teach urban youth how to handle the responsibilities of being an effective leader in church, family, school, community, and corporate by providing them with the resources and life skills needed to be a leader of today and well into the future.
Description
Leadership Empowerment Growth Achievement Comes from our Youth (LEGACY) whose mission is to address the problems of illiteracy, youth violence, and childhood obesity. LEGACY strives to eliminate barriers effecting today’s youth by providing mentorship, creativity development, training and supportive services that enables them to be outstanding leaders today and well into the future. Although LEGACY is not for all students, we provide resources for all students in which we serve. In addition, LEGACY is connected with several organizations, of which could be beneficial to those who are not a good fit for LEGACY and/or may require special attention.
We offer mentoring and tutoring programs that are designed to increase the student’s overall grades. We also offer an arts/theater program that allows our students to showcase their talents and broaden their experience in topics, such as, theater production. Our leadership program enables students to an understanding of the benefits of college and life after graduation as well as the importance of business etiquette. We provide school supplies to students as well as parental workshops. Our foundation is currently staffed by volunteers who commit their time to ensure that the programs offered are successful.
